Antibody is a project inspired by autoimmune diseases that turn the body against itself forcing it to function as its own enemy. The immune system creates antibodies that attack the body taking it apart from the inside out and causing a slow but certain deterioration. The body is fragile and vulnerable but strong and vindictive, it is both the torturer and the victim. The exposure of sights that is usually not exposed to the public such as bodily fluids including blood, or deformed limbs is visceral and repulsive. This may be referred to as “undoing the body” since what lies beneath the envelope of our skin is usually veiled from the eyes of the public, and the body is only thought of as what is external. And when we do think of the body as consisting of inner and outer, what is inside is not meant to be shared. This is why diseased, mutilated, deformed, and dead bodies are seen as taboo subjects that elicites a level of discomfort in the viewers when presented publicly.

الجسم المضاد هو مشروع مستوحى من أمراض المناعة الذاتية التي تقلب الجسم ضد نفسه وتجبره على العمل كعدو لنفسه. يقوم الجهاز المناعي بإنشاء أجسام مضادة تهاجم الجسم وتسبب تدهورًا بطيئًا، ولكن مؤكدًا. الجسد ضعيف، ولكنه قوي، فهو الجلاد والضحية في نفس الوقت. إن التعرض للمناظر التي لا يتم عرضها عادة للجمهور مثل سوائل الجسم بما في ذلك الدم، أو الأجساد المشوهة هو أمر مثير للاشمئزاز. يمكن الإشارة إلى هذا باسم “التراجع عن الجسد” لأن ما يكمن تحت غلاف جلدنا عادة ما يكون محجوبًا عن أعين الجمهور، ولا يُنظر إلى الجسد إلا على أنه ما هو خارجي. وعندما نفكر في الجسد على أنه يتكون من داخلي وخارجي، فإن ما في الداخل ليس المقصود مشاركته. ولهذا السبب يُنظر إلى الجثث المريضة والمشوهة والميتة على أنها مواضيع محظورة تثير مستوى من الانزعاج لدى المشاهدين عند عرضها علنًا.

Nouran Malek is a 21 year old Visual Artist minoring in Psychology and English Literature at the American University in Cairo. She is very interested in art therapy and the relationship between Art and the human’s body and mind. As well as, how our psychological states affect our Art and vice versa. This is why most of her work is figurative or portraiture, revolving around the human and the topic of ‘the body’, and contains conceptual and philosophical meanings.
